Jess,
I definitely think your drawings are a crucial piece of your film--and maybe these objects you mention too (the mask and the leg brace...interesting). I see your point about silence, but as a viewer, I think I'm really going to want to hear your voice and have you guide me through this film (especially because you're working with a subject that most people associate with fear, carnage, and horror). So, I'd rather have your voice than voice-less text boxes.

Hi Jess---you had a really detailed storyboard, so I think much of your planning work is accomplished. Think carefully about what you can film and capture (montage pictures) today, and what you'll need to get outside of class. Also, I wonder if you can't introduce that idea of the mask earlier, so that your audience realizes that it's an important symbol? (Perhaps as a title slide? Or in very short frames---almost subliminal---in anticipation of it's arrival in relation to Michael?)

Finally, how are you going to get the sound of bones breaking, exactly?

I think that it would be great if you brought your pictures/drawings to class today..maybe we could help you pick and choose? I also liked the idea of the mask. Maybe you could zoom in on the mask and have it fade into your story; this might show how you relate to Michael. This idea might not be great, but you could work with it by incorporating the mask into your film more. I also like the idea of using the music from Halloween; I liked the idea of the Requiem for a Dream song until Kim made those comparisons. But I like the Rob Zombie song better because it is more upbeat, but I am not sure if you'd want a more upbeat song for your video because it isn't the happiest of videos (if that makes sense). Text boxes also might be ideal, but maybe at the end you would want to do a voice over to let viewers know this is how you feel and what you think in the present.

Jess,
I think your ideas that you have down are great. I think you took today's class and really got down to figuring out your music and some of the ways you'll portray your ideas. It seems to me you really have a lot going on with sound. I think the idea of having the Halloween theme will be very effective. Is there any other music in the movie that will help portray your beginning of your film? I also like your ideas of the text boxes. I think for you they will be very powerful and will give your audience a great effect. Good luck with it all!

Whoa! Jess!! Big changes here---all to the good!! Yup, you're definitely on to something here. I wondered about exactly the same line that Megan did---what is it about horror movies that made you feel better? I think answering that question would be key for helping your audience to see these movies (and this movie in particular) as you do, instead of as dark, scary things.

As you start thinking about your film, I think you definitely have to put your injury in there somewhere. And do you still have copies of your cartoons? It would be great to be able to film those AND your Halloween drawings.

I wonder too if there isn't a way to use your fascination with Michael's story as a comparison with your own. NOT the killing your sister part, of course!! But the part about "no one know why he does it." It took us a long time to know why you draw pictures of the mask. So you may be able to use that as a lead in to your essay.

Think also about where you want to end up with your film. What's the idea you want your audience to leave with?

Jess-
It sounds like you've really found your personal essay here. Here's something that really struck me in your post: "I was almost a ghost to them at this point...I felt like I no longer mattered to them so I would just go home and watch movies, especially horror. It made me feel better in some way watching these movies."
Wow! Your writing is taking you in important directions towards self-discovery. My question then is what about horror films made you feel better? Why not romantic comedies or action movies? What is it about the genre of horror and the theme of masks that you find so compelling? How might you invite your reader to both experience horror films like you do and to understand the particular role they've played in shaping your art?

I'm really interested in how young you were when you saw these movies. Most kids get scared easily. Do you family members really like scary movies? I don't know if i've ever seen halloween. I think i should now haha. I would really like to see your drawings. I think those would be very cool to see. Besides Halloween what other scary movies are your favorites?

I thought it was interesting that they totally transformed the original Halloween and are now trying to make Michael more scary. What do you think about that? You obviously like the original one better, but why? What do you like about the movie in particular? As Stacey questioned- why this movie?

It might be time, Jess, to think about how some of the images that you have in your collection of ideas might be used as a visual metaphor for your experience.

Masks tend to be something that we associate a number of things with; hiding, concealing identity, concealing a scar. You also have strong interests in getting behind Michael's mask, and that in and of itself might function as a metaphor for you. What in your own experience of your fascination with Halloween is "masked"? What might be revealed if we "looked behind the mask"?

Jess--
I'm thinking about our conference yesterday and the story you told me about getting injured. That story seems crucial to your topic because it's about change--something in your life shifted radically (and not by your own choosing). Where did you turn? You turned to horror films--namely Halloween. You also said that your drawings themselves changed from light-hearted cartoons to darker things like sculls. What you've got there is a "before and after" narrative arc that could be very useful in framing your pe film. So many famous writers and artists spent time alone as adolescents (convalescing in bed, daydreaming, isolated from "normal" kid life). What is it about the genre of horror films that fascinates you? Are they predictable? Are they about a certain kind of justice or morality? Do they question cultural norms or do they reinforce them? In other words, what did this genre offer you (and what does it continue to offer you) as a way of thinking about or understanding your own experiences?
