My topic is my obsession with the movie “Halloween.” I’m interested in the entire movie, not just little tid bits here and there. Everything from the actual story to the music, even the bloopers are all something I’m strongly into. I guess this is so important to me because it’s the one horror movie that basically started the whole genre of “slasher” films. A lot of these types of movies that come out now are one way or another inspired by what John Carpenter did in 1978 so without him and the movie, we wouldn’t see half of what’s out now. By doing this short personal essay film, I’ll hopefully answer the question as to why I’m so infactuated with this film and maybe make people see where a lot of my inspiration for my drawings comes from. Not all of them are of Michael, but it’s clear that horror films play a major role in what I do. On the other hand, I’m worried that people will think I’m just obsessed with a fictional masked psychopathic killer, but that isn’t even remotely part of why I like this movie so much. That really has nothing to do with my interest in the movie. I mean yeah, he’s the main character of the film and he always has been, but I’ve always liked the story as to why he wears the mask, not why he kills people. That doesn’t interest me at all. It’s just a part of his character, it’s what he does. Hopefully by the end of this, I can make people understand that “Halloween” is not only an important film for the horror genre, but it’s an important aspect of my life as well because without it, I don’t think I would have as much inspiration to do half the drawings I do now or even in the future.

I am interested in hearing the story of the first time you viewed this film. Give me context: Why were you watching it? How old were you? Had you seen other horror movies before this one and like them? Or was this your first horror movie experience? Were you watching it alone or with others? I think that it might be important to go back to that first experience with the film in order to get at this question of why you’re so “infatuated” with this movie. I’m guessing you accumulated a lot of this knowledge about the film after seeing it…?
Jess,
I like how you’re already thinking like an “essayist”–trying to understand and think through your own obsession/passion. Your concern about what people might think is important–and your awarness of this is right on. So how will you approach your obsession? What do you want viewers to understand and think about? I’m fascinated by your comment about the mask and your question about what the mask represents and the role it plays. Your own drawings seem really central here!

Oooh, I’m with Megan and Jenn. Since this is a personal essay film, you want to keep your own interests at the center here. The outside information about Halloween’s influence on the horror movie genre is useful, but it doesn’t seem to get at your own obsession with it.
You might think about what continues to draw you to the movie. If it’s the story about the mask, then take some time and write about that story. What is it that you find compelling? How does it make you feel? What do you associate with it? And, of course, from a filmmaking perspective, what kinds of images or objects do you associate with it?
Jess,
I’m interested in why Halloween. I like you love horror movies and find Halloween a good one to watch. What was your initial response when you watched it the first time? I think your topic though is very interesting and the fact that you have such an almost obsession for the movie is interesting. I think that the ideas that you’ve brought up is interesting. How do you think your going to put you film together? What would you use? Things like clips from the movie? The music? I think this could be really interesting.

I am interested to see where this takes you. You seem so intent on finally understanding this “obsession,” its exciting to listen to. The one part of your blog that struck me was when you said that you weren’t interested in Michael because he killed people, but because of the mask. The mask is such a huge cultural reference, even today.
I think that you should use some of your drawings for the film. It seems like such a big part of your life and its also very personal.
It is interesting to hear you talk about your obession well at the same time you are trying to understand your own obession. I think your film will be great as you show us your journey to figuring this obession out. When did it all start? How old were you? When did you notice that you were obessed with the movie and that a majority of your room is consumed by dolls and posters from the movie? What is it exactly that you like about the movie? What are your drawing of? Are they inspired by the movie or are they actual characters and scences from the movie? I could ask a hundred questions- GREAT TOPIC CHOICE!!!
I really want to see your obsession with Halloween. I am really interested in what you said yesterday about your room being covered in things from Halloween. I think that would be very cool to see. I would also like to see how people react when they first see your room.

I’m really interested to see your film on Halloween, mainly because I am such a baby with horror movies, I get so scared. I think it would be interesting to put in some of the bloopers into your film because it would give people a different perspective on the Halloween films, then people like me wouldn’t be so scared to watch them.
To tell you the truth, I didnt even know there were bloopers in the Halloween movies.
I think this would be a great thing to explore. I love to watch the Halloween movies but I only watch them around Halloween, so it would be interesting to see what you have to say about them. Since you probably watch them all the time. When did you first see Halloween?
